As we reported back in February, we have started constructing our first Passivhaus at Hawksworth. Passivhaus is an advanced energy performance and thermal comfort standard which originates from Germany, requiring superior levels of insulation and air-tightness, far above current UK Building Regulation standards. The Architect is Halliday Clark in Shipley, PQS is the Michael Eyres Partnership and the contract is in excess of £1m.
So, after a long, wet winter we are now progressing well in the Spring sunshine. Whilst Passivhaus buildings can be erected from varying construction techniques, Hawkwind consists of a Structural Insulated Panel inner frame (SIPS), largely clad on the outside in local, random stone, giving the house a typical external appearance. Inside is where things really start to differ, with a further 250mm of unbroken insulation lining the SIPS panels prior to timber studs which provide a zone for services, prior to the typical plasterboard inner surface. A taped, internal membrane ensures excellent air-tightness, whilst thermal breaks wherever structural members breach the building’s envelope minimise cold-bridging and heat loss. Triple-glazed windows and doors are also part of the Passivhaus criteria, as is a Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery system which provides a comfortable internal environment together with extraction of moisture and odours from kitchens and bathrooms.
Whilst we have used the SIPS system before, and worked on increasingly airtight buildings, this is our first Passivhaus construction. We will check the building’s airtightness as we progress and must achieve an airtightness level of 0.6 air changes per hour at completion, which is far in excess of the 10 air changes per hour, UK Building Regulation requirement !
The house also includes a part basement garaging and entrance area, internal oak frame and various Smart Home features to control TV, music and lighting and even has its own cinema room !

We have recently completed a new lift installation, to facilitate disabled access into the Chapel, at Scargill House Near Kettlewell.
Being a Grade II Listed Building the details all had to be approved by both English Heritage and the Yorkshire Dales national Park authority who required that the alterations did not detract from the original look of the building.
All parties were delighted with the local limestone we sourced, and the way we have extended the stainless steel roof covering of the existing chapel roof, and have commented that the curved liftshaft blends so well that it looks like it has always been there !!
This was our 4th project at Scargill and we are pleased that the client is happy with the finished product.

We are delighted to announce that we will once again be providing a new facility for Ermysted’s Grammar School. We have been appointed, following a competitive tender process, to build the new 6th Form Centre, which will provide a stand-alone teaching and free-study space for the school’s 6th Form pupils. The construction will begin week commencing 17th August taking advantage of the holiday period and safer access onto the campus for heavy construction vehicles, and is set to be completed by end of March 2016.
